What are some of the causes of back pain?

Back pain can be a complex issue and can be caused by a number of things. Often people first experience back pain when twisting, pulling or bending. Picking up a heavy object is one such example. Sometimes it can be from simple motions we do every day such as getting in and out of vehicles.


What can happen when back pain is not taken care of?

When back pain is not taken care of properly symptoms can worsen over time through repetitive stresses or re-injury to the area. Back pain can also cause altered posture that can lead to future injuries. Often back pain can affect other aspects of your life. Things that can be effected are your ability to sleep throughout the night, work productivity, and even your family and social life.


What are some of the traditional treatments for back pain?

Traditional treatments for back pain may initially include over the counter pain medication. You may be prescribed muscle relaxers and or additional prescription pain relievers in acute cases. Therapy is often considered before more invasive pain treatments such as injections or surgery.

What advice would you give a patient suffering with back pain?

If you are suffering with back pain, ice is best used in the first 1-2 days. It helps to reduce inflammation which leads to pain. Keep active and moving. A sedentary lifestyle can prolong and worsen your condition. Certain types of activities and movements may produce pain but it is best to move as much as you can in order to keep muscles loose and joints moving. Always be mindful of your posture. Slouching at a computer desk, reading in bed, and lifting with your back all put added stress on your back.
